This book brings development theory and practice into dialogue with the religious tradition, in order to construct a new, trans-disciplinary vision of development, with integral ecology at its heart. It focuses on the Catholic social tradition and its conception of integral human development on the one hand, and on the works of economist and philosopher Amartya Sen which underpin the human development approach on the other. The aim of the paper is to analyse how theological resources can help inform concrete actions of marginalized groups to transform unjust structures, understood as structures which prevent people from enjoying opportunities to live flourishing human lives. Using Amartya Sen's Idea of Justice as conceptual frame, and the narrative of actions of the Confederation of Popular Economy Workers, the paper explores how theological resources can help mediate the social mobilization of marginalized groups to transform unjust structures and create the conditions for better lives. It focuses on two resources: religious social teachings on work, the economy and solidarity on the one hand, and ecclesiology and liturgy on the other. It discusses the role these resources have played, and are playing, in the formation of agents of social transformation, and in facilitating the voices of the excluded to be heard and listened to in political processes. It concludes by examining some challenges of theological mediation in the transformation of unjust structures.

The paper examines the relationship between Creating Capabilities and political liberalism. It argues that the reality of climate change calls for the capabilities approach to be more rooted in a relational anthropology which the Aristotelian ethical tradition is more akin to. It discusses how traces of this ethical tradition can be found in Nussbaum's capabilities approach itself: affiliation as an architectonic capability leads to the common good being the end of political action, and practical reason as an architectonic capability leads to reasoning being structured by concerns for the common good. The paper concludes by suggesting some practical implications of an Aristotelian version of the capabilities approach.

The paper analyzes the contribution of Amartya Sen's The Idea of Justice for development studies. The influence of Sen's book for thinking about development is likely to parallel that of John Rawls's Theory of Justice in political theory. This paper argues that The Idea of Justice has a limited reach in relation to addressing concrete cases of injustice because it is built only on the dual foundations of freedom and reasoning. On the basis of real world examples of unjust situations derived from Sen's body of writings itself, the paper discusses the limits of The Idea of Justice. It contends that remedying injustice requires an understanding of how justice is structural and which recognizes that discussion of justice is inseparable from reasoning about the nature of the good society. The paper concludes by pointing out The Idea of Justice's ambiguous relationship with liberalism.
